Just across the street from the Michaelkirche in the middle of Berlin, you can find a citypark called Engelbecken. It is a perfect location to spend a sunday-afternoon or meet some friends for a drink or a picknick. Because the park is surrounding a lake, you can also put your feet in the water to cool down.
Engelbecken Park
Engelbecken Park can be divided into two different areas. At one side you can find the small water called Engelbecken: It is very nice to sit around the water and enjoy the peacefulness in the middle of the city. The location is perfect for a picknick and in the summer some people also take a swim. More on the south side of this Berliner park, in the direction of Kreuzberg, you can have a walk in an impressing flower-garden.
Short history
From 1852 till 1926 the Engelbecken Park was used as a small harbour. Later, after the war, the Berlin-wall was build straight through this area and it became abandoned. Then in 2006, long after the wall was gone, the government came up with the idea to build a park. Nowadays Engelbecken Park is a citypark where many people have lunch, have a picknick or just relax on a free afternoon.
Cafe am Engelbecken
If you get hungry during your stay at Engelbecken Park, you have several options to grab some food. When you leave the garden in the direction of Kreuzberg, you will find the Oranienstrasse. In this street you can find many cute, cheap and delicious restaurants. But an even better idea might be to have a bite in Cafe am Engelbecken. This cafe/restaurant sells great pizza’s and you will not find many restaurants who have a better location in Berlin. Cafe am Engelbecken was also built in 2006 but has recently been renovated. Your table will be directly on the water and the prices are very reasonable (pizza = about 7,50€).
Summary
So if you are looking for a nice place to have a rest or you want to see some nature in the middle of Berlin, visit Engelbecken Park. Unfortunately it is not the nicest place later at night, because many young people tend to use the park as a drinking-spot, but during the day it is a very friendly, peaceful and nice place to spend a few hours.
