Berlin is known for its crazy nightlife and wild events, but the city also offers its visitors a lot on a cultural level: The city has a rich history, offers many impressive buildings and we all love the touristic attractions all over the city. Besides that you can also visit plenty of interesting art and photo-exhibitions in Berlin. One of the best photo-exhibitions Berlin has to offer are organised in the C/O Berlin in the west of Berlin.

C/O Berlin

In the year 2000 three friends (photographer Stephan Erfurt, designer Marc Naroska and architect Ingo Pott) started a small exhibition with the name „Magnum° Betrachtungen über die Welt“. Although nobody expected much of the concept, the exhibition was a great success and over 30.000 people visited. This success made them continue with the concept and from that moment on they used the name C/O Berlin. At this moment, more than 17 years and three locations in Berlin later, the exhibitions of C/O Berlin can be found in the Amerika Haus in Charlottenburg. This location offers enough space for plenty of beautiful photos with over 2200 m2 of space. In the entrance of the Amerika Haus you can also find a small book-shop, in which you can find many interesting books about Berlin, photography and art.

The Amerika Haus

The name Amerika Haus comes from the period after the second World War. The Americans used this building as an information-center but gave it back to the city of Berlin in 2006. The building can be found in the Hardenbergstraße, which is located directly under the S-Bahn station of Zoologischer Garten. The C/O Berlin offers versatile exhibitions in the Amerika Haus several times a year and most of the time they are really worth a visit. There is also a small cafetaria in the building so if you want to have a coffee and a piece of pie before or after the photo-exhibition, this should not be a problem.

Practical information

As mentioned before, C/O Berlin in the Amerika Haus can be most easily reached from station Zoologischer Garten. Depending of the exit you take in the station it is probably best to find the big supermarket called “Ullrich”, which is located under the bridge where the S-Bahn arrives. Then on the right of this supermarket you can find the Hardenbergstraße and if you just follow that street for about 100 meters you can find the Amerika Haus on the right side. Most of the time you will see large photos in front od the building. The entrance of a photo-exhibition normally costs 10 Euro but if you can prove that you are a student you only pay 6 Euro to get in. On the website of C/O Berlin you can find which artists are scheduled.

Below you can find the most important information about the C/O Berlin listed:

Photo-exhibitions in C/O Berlin

Several times a year different photo-exhibitions can be visited in C/O Berlin. The topic and style often differs quite much but that is a good thing if you ask me. We personally love to visit most of the exhibitions and below you can find some of the photos we have shot during the last few visits. You can either click on the names of the artists below or just scroll down and enjoy all images.

October 2017 – Danny Lyon

Danny Lyon was born in New York in 1942 as a son of a Jewish immigrant. His first famous photos were made in the 60s when he was following protests of Afro-Americans against racism. These photos are very impressive: It is just fascinating to see how much changed in the last fifty years. Besides that section of the exhibition you can also enjoy photos of daily life in the prisons of Texas, a motor-gang in Chicago and other cool projects of Danny Lyon. Besides photography, he was also very interested in movie-making and some of his movies are projected in the exhibition. Altogether this photo-exhibition is worth a visit although it would have been nice to have a bit more background information with some photos. But maybe Danny Lyon wanted to give the visitor’s room for imagination here. The photo-exhibition of Danny Lyon can be visited till the 3rd of December.

Anton Corbijn

In the end of 2015 and beginning of 2016 you could enjoy the photos of the Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn in the C/O Berlin. The exhibition consisted of many impressive images of artists, actors and other famous people. Anton Corbijn has always been fascinated by the music-world and that is why you can find photos from Miles Davis, Kurt Cobain, Mick Jagger and plenty of other bands and singers. I personally really loved this exhibition and the different projects from Corbijn which were presented in it. Below you can find a few photos to give you an impression of this photo-exhibition in Berlin.
