Besides the regular malls and shopping-streets there are also a few extraordinary department stores in Berlin which every shopaholic should visit.

Large variety of products

The department stores in Berlin sell a very broad variety of products. This is especially great for larger groups and families. When daddy is searching a new book, mommy can have a look at the latest fashion and the children can check out the music-section. Just agree on a time and meet back at the entrance or the checkout and everybody wins. Don’t forget that the time is flying when you are shopping in these department stores.

1. KaDeWe

The KadeWe is the most famous department store in Berlin. The store opened its doors in 1907 and brought exotic products from all over the world to Berlin. The name KaDeWe stands for Kaufhaus des Westens and up to 180.000 people visit this department store every single day.

Six floors of shopping paradise

More than 100 years after the opening, the KaDeWe still attracts loads of tourists and locals. It helps that the department store is located in the area of Kurfürstendamm, so it can easily be combined with other shops and a Christmas Market at the Gedächtniskirche. The KaDeWe has 6 floors, 2000 employees and more than than 60.000 square meters of shopping pleasure.

Tip: Make sure you checkout the top-floor of the KaDeWe, this is where they sell exclusive and foreign foods and specialities.

2. Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof

Another large department store in Germany is called Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof. The store used to be called Galaria Kaufhof but in 2019 they combined strengths with another German store called Karstadt. There used to be more than 130 stores in Germany but many of them needed to be closed in the last couple of years. Lucky enough the one located at Alexanderplatz is still open as it’s a great addition to such a nice shopping area.

Wide range of products

The Galaria Karstadt Kaufhof offers a wide range of different products: From clothes to books about Berlin and from kitchen equipment to Berlinsouvenirs. In the basement of this department store in Berlin you can also find food and drinks (like a supermarket). It does not come as a surprise that the Galaria Karstadt Kaufhof is easy to reach as Alexanderplatz is the most central station in Berlin.

Tip: Right now, there are still several Galaria Kaufhof’s in Berlin. Check Google to find the nearest one to where you stay.

3. Galaries Lafayette

The area around the Friedrichstraße is a more exclusive and expensive part of Berlin. In this are you can find another impressive department store. It is called Galeries Lafayette and its originally from France. The building is build by a French architect and is seen as one of the most interesting builded objects of the 1990s.

Latest fashion trends

The Galaries Lafayette can be reached from station Friedrichstraße and offers the latest trends when it comes to clothing and shoes. The building looks great from the outside but is also quite impressive from the inside. This part of Berlin is definitely worth a visit. After you done with Galaries Lafayette it is not a long walk to visit Berliner attractions like the Brandenburger Tor.

Tip: The architecture of the Galaries Lafayette is worth checking out even for people who do not want to go shopping.

4. Peek & Cloppenburg

A large store which is located not very far from the KaDeWe, is Peek and Cloppenburg. This multilevel-store does not have that wide a range of products as the other department stores in Berlin. But if you are looking for clothes, this store is a great spot to start. The Peek & Cloppenburg can be found in the Tauentzienstraße but also in the new Mall of Berlin (Potsdamer Platz).

400 different clothing brands

The upper-floor of the Peek and Cloppenburg focuses more on business-clothing but in the basement more hip and leisure brands can be found. Peek & Cloppenburg offers more than 400 different brands. Some examples are Scotch & Soda, Levi’s, Lee, Cheap Monday and Superdry. The store can be reached from station Wittenbergplatz or also with a 10 minute walk from the zoo at Zoologischer Garten.

Tip: The Peek & Cloppenburg can easily be combined with a visit to the KaDeWe. They are in the same street.

5. Dussmann KulturKaufhaus

A shop which is quite different from the other department stores in Berlin is Dussmann KulturKaufhaus. This shop is a heaven for media-lovers. If you are looking for the latest music, children-books about Berlin or anything related to media you have to visit this store in Berlin.

More than just a store

Dussmann KulturKaufhaus is more than just a store. The owners really want you to feel at home. You can take as much time as you want to decide on the right item and there are plenty of comfortable corners where you can sit and get an impression of what you are about the buy. Besides that the Dussmann KulturKaufhaus has the most extreme opening-hours of all the department stores in Berlin. You could call it the Berghain of the department stores, it opens at 09.00 and closes at midnight.

Tip: The Dussmann KulturKaufhaus is open till midnight almost every day of the week!
